A genuinely growing category of work has emerged alongside the AI boom that most people outside the industry don't fully realize exists, let alone know how to break into: the human work of training, evaluating, and stress-testing AI systems. It's not a niche curiosity — it's real, paid work, increasingly in demand, and the path into it looks nothing like the software engineering career path most people assume "AI jobs" require.

What This Work Actually Involves

The category spans a genuinely wide range of tasks. Data annotation means labeling data — images, text, audio — so AI models can learn from clearly structured examples. AI training and RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback) work involves reviewing and rating model outputs to help shape what the model learns is a good versus bad response. Domain expert evaluation brings real subject-matter expertise — medical, legal, financial, scientific — to assess whether AI outputs in that domain are actually accurate, not just plausible-sounding. Red teaming involves actively trying to find ways an AI system fails or can be manipulated, before real users find those same gaps. Prompt engineering involves crafting and refining the inputs that get the best, most reliable output

from a model. Multilingual evaluation assesses model performance and cultural appropriateness across languages a model needs to support.

The Skills That Actually Matter Here

This is the part that surprises most people: a computer science background isn't the entry requirement for most of this work. What matters more consistently is genuine domain expertise relevant to the evaluation task, strong attention to detail, clear written communication, and real critical thinking applied consistently across a large volume of judgment calls. A former teacher evaluating educational AI content, a practicing nurse assessing medical AI accuracy, or a bilingual professional evaluating translation quality often brings more relevant expertise to that specific evaluation task than a software engineer with no domain background would.

General data annotation and evaluation work tends to be the most accessible entry point, requiring less specialized background and serving as a genuine way to build experience in the field. Domain expert evaluator and red teaming roles typically require existing expertise — clinical experience, legal training, scientific background, security research experience — that you bring with you rather than develop on the job, which means the right starting point genuinely depends on what expertise you already have versus what you'd need to build first.

How to Position Yourself, Whatever Your Background

If you're coming from teaching, writing, editing, or any field built around careful evaluation of structured content, that experience translates more directly to AI evaluation work than it might seem. If you're bilingual or multilingual, multilingual evaluation work specifically values that fluency in a way few other fields do as directly. If you have deep expertise in a regulated or technical field — healthcare, law, finance, engineering — domain expert evaluation work specifically needs people who can tell the difference between an AI output that sounds right and one that's actually correct, which is a different and more specialized skill than general fluency in the subject.

Setting Realistic Expectations

This work is often structured as contract or project-based engagement rather than traditional full-time employment, at least initially — flexible, but without some of the structure and benefits of a conventional role. Pace and structure vary considerably by the specific platform or company involved, and it's worth going in with realistic expectations about that rather than assuming it mirrors a standard corporate job. For many people, particularly those building this alongside other work or transitioning between careers, that flexibility is genuinely an advantage rather than a downside — but it's worth knowing upfront.

Avoiding the Scams That Have Followed the Gold Rush

Rapid growth in any field attracts opportunists, and AI training work has been no exception — postings promising unrealistic pay for minimal effort, requests for payment to "get started" or access training materials, and vague descriptions of the actual work involved are all worth treating with real skepticism. Legitimate opportunities come from established staffing partners or companies with a verifiable presence, a clear description of the actual task involved, and — as with any legitimate work arrangement — never require you to pay anything to be considered or to get started. If this kind of work sounds like a genuine fit for your background, it's worth treating the search the same way you would any other legitimate job search: real research into who's actually hiring, real scrutiny of vague or too-good-to-be-true listings, and a clear sense of what specific expertise you're bringing to the table before you start applying.
